Heavy metal

The seeds of heavy rock music were sown in the 60's and can be heard in songs like The Beatles' Helter Skelter and The Kinks' You Really Got Me, the first heavy rock bands being acts such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.

Where heavy rock becomes heavy metal is debatable, but it could be said to be harder, faster and with a litle less pomp.

The speed of metal was turned up in the late 70's and early 80's with bands like Motörhead and Iron Maiden, and in the 80's the hair got bigger when glam metal became popular with bands like Poison and Motley Crue.

Many subgenres came into existance later with styles like Thrash Metal (Metallica), Groove Metal (Pantera) and Nu Metal (Slipknot).

Highlight: Motorhead's Ace of Spades.
