Pop Punk

Pop Punk - a fusion of punk fashion and tempo with poppy tunes and lyrics.

Although some earlier punk bands like The Buzzcocks have had the term used to describe them due to their own chosen flavour of punk being relatively poppy in nature, these days the term is more often used to refer to a seperate genre.

After Punk itself had made way for New Wave some bands like Bad Religion and The Vandals took a more pop/melodic direction while still being obviously influenced by punk and hardcore punk. In turn these bands influenced a wave of bands that came along from the mid 80's onwards like Green Day and The Offspring.

Pop punk is said to have had its commercial peak in the late 90's with Blink-182's album selling 15 million copies. Very pop punk you could say.

Pop punk has more recently enjoyed it's very own new wave with bands like Paramore, Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the disco.

Highlight: Green Day's album American Idiot.
